Telent secure contract to maintain fire safety assets across TfL rail network

Broadening its expansion into fire safety services, critical infrastructure specialist Telent is now responsible for the maintenance of fire safety assets across the London Underground and other Transport for London (TfL) rail sites.

The contract, which runs for five years, involves the supply of fire maintenance services within stations, depots, and buildings across the Underground and Elizabeth Line, Overground and London Trams.

Telent is responsible for ensuring that assets, including detection and alarm systems, sprinkler and water mist systems, dry and wet mains systems, damper controls, and fire extinguishers are functional and updated. The assets include 700 fire panels, 33,000 end devices (call points and detectors), 3,000 sprinklers, 90 hydrant systems and 25,000 extinguishers.

“We’ve been a trusted supplier to TfL for more than 25 years and we’re delighted to be awarded the Fire Systems Maintenance contract and expand our working relationship withTfL,” said Telent’s Reg Cook, Director of Asset Management. “As specialists in maintaining mission critical and safety critical systems we are proud to lead such an important project, and one that plays a vital role in protecting the travelling public, TfL’s staff and estate, and contributing to Keeping London Moving.”

The work represents a major fire maintenance contract for Telent and signifies a key milestone for the company. It follows the attainment of fire detection and alarm system accreditations from British Alarm Fire Engineering (BAFE), enabling the company to provide upgrades to rail, metro and underground station operators looking to improve fire safety.

Now in the early stages of the contract, Telent has expanded its Fire organisation, with a substantial number of fire engineering experts working across all aspects of critical fire infrastructure. On the back of this contract, Telent is looking forward to building its capability in fire safety maintenance and drawing on its decades of experience in mission critical communications and technology.

This contract award follows Telent’s recently announced progress for TfL, to upgrade fire safety capabilities at Canary Wharf Elizabeth line station. Working for Rail for London Infrastructure (RfLI), Telent is removing redundant elements, and simplifying the previous configuration to enhance user-friendliness. The project is also simplifying the task of upgrading assets for future improvements.
