'Safety critical' closure of A417 near Air Balloon roundabout ordered

The Crickley Hill section of the A417

A stretch of the A417 will be closed later today (Tuesday, January 7) to address a safety-critical issue linked to recent bad weather and forecast freezing temperatures. National Highways will shut the busy road between the A46 roundabout at Brockworth and the Air Balloon roundabout near Birdlip from 9pm.

Heavy rainfall has led to high water levels across the carriageway at the Crickley Hill section, a steep incline. There are fears water on the road could freeze and cause hazardous driving conditions.

Access to Cold Slad via a road half-way up the hill will be maintained. Emergency services will also be able to use the road.

National Highways said: "In response to recent bad weather, we are addressing a safety-critical situation at the lower end of the A417. Due to high water levels across the carriageway, the A417 will be closed tonight, Tuesday 7 January, at 9pm between the A46 Brockworth junction and the Air Balloon roundabout to vacuum debris and flush the drainage system.

"This work is essential to prevent water from spilling onto both carriageways, which could create hazardous conditions if temperatures drop and freezing occurs. We appreciate your patience and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

"Residents and emergency services access to Cold Slad will be maintained at all times."
