People’s views wanted to help shape improvements to journeys in Manchester

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and Manchester City Council (MCC) are seeking people’s views on travelling in Manchester – including to and from the city centre – to help shape improvements to people’s journeys.

TfGM and MCC want to make journeys better and easier by making them more reliable, safer and more sustainable. This will be done by making improvements to streets in Manchester through funding from the Government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement.

By sharing their experience of the transport network in Manchester, people can help shape where investment goes, what would make their journeys better and help us to make the right improvements so journeys can be made safer, more reliable and more sustainable.

This could be any type of journey – travelling to work or school, going shopping or taking part in leisure activities.

A wide range of options will be explored to ensure the right improvements are being made for each individual area, including:

  • • Making bus stops better, safer and more accessible.

  • • Making it easier to walk, wheel or cycle along routes, to a bus stop or to get from a bus to a train or tram stop with better pedestrian and cyclist crossings and footpaths

  • • Introducing a range of measures to help shorten bus journey times and make services more reliable.

  •

These could also bring a range of further benefits, including reducing the impact of transport on the environment by getting more people on buses and walking, wheeling and cycling; improving neighbourhoods to meet the needs of local communities; and driving growth and economic prosperity by making it easier for people to access jobs and opportunities.

Danny Vaughan, Chief Network Officer at TfGM said: “We are always looking at how we can make it easier for people to get around and want people to get in touch and let us know how we can do just that.

“The improvements we put in place will ultimately form a vital part of the Bee Network - our plan for a joined-up London-style transport network, helping us to make journeys more reliable, safer and more sustainable.      “Since we began the process of taking buses under local control nearly one year ago, franchised services have become significantly more reliable and consistently out-perform the remaining part of the network that will join the Bee Network in January.

“We also continue to promote walking, wheeling and cycling, creating routes that better connect with buses, trams and trains as part of our ambitious plan to deliver the country’s largest active travel network here in Greater Manchester.”

Cllr Tracey Rawlins, Manchester City Council’s executive member for clean air, environment and transport, said: “We know Manchester is a great place to live, work and play, and an essential part of a successful city is making sure our residents and visitors can get around easily and efficiently.

“Having great travel options also gives us all the opportunity to help reduce car travel – particularly for shorter journeys – limit the city’s carbon emissions and improve the quality of our air.

“As ever, one of the best ways to better understand how easy it is – or not – to travel around Manchester is by asking the very people who do it day in, day out. This is your chance to help guide our thinking about travel in Manchester and suggest ways you think we can make it better.”
