Oxford firefighters deal with incidents on highways

Oxfordshire firefighters have put their training to good use in dealing with a series of incidents on the county's highways.

Rewley Road Fire Station have said their highways procedure training, for dealing with traffic incidents like collisions and breakdowns, have come in handy during live events.

The procedures are in place to keep people safe working in busy traffic conditions.

A spokesperson for the fire station said: "During our recent tour Red Watch carried out some highways procedure training only for it to be called into use when attending a couple of incidents.

"Working on busy roads can be dangerous, so these procedures keep our firefighters and those we are helping safe during incidents."

They include guidance on the best way to close a lane, when necessary, in which the fire engine is used to protect firefighters as they lay down cones, facing oncoming traffic and working as a team.

One crew member remains on lookout, and once the lane is closed up to and slightly beyond the site of the incident, the fire engine moves within the cordoned off area.

The crew also had the opportunity to use some new equipment, cutting tools soon to be rolled out to other stations.

A set of Holmtro Pentheon cutters, spreaders and a ram is an improvement on the crew's current equipment, with "added bells and whistles", to give them an advantage in emergency situations.

Firefighters tried out a number of techniques with the new kit, practicing on a disused car.
