Leicestershire’s Highways Design Guide (LHDG) has undergone a major overhaul and is now available to access via a new website.
The County Council says it’s designed to be intuitive, interactive and easily searchable, and contains a wealth of information that can be used by practitioners including developers, transport consultants and planners.
This includes details of council policies and principles, as well as technical guidance and checklists, relating to the delivery and adoption of proposed highway and transportation assets that form part of new development in the county.
It considers all things highway related from road surfacing to traffic signals, trees and roadside verges and is the foundation on which the council provides highway observations on planning applications in its role as Local Highway Authority (LHA).
The redesign follows the recent major changes to national guidance and policy and a desire to move away from the LHDG being available as a suite of PDF documents (although a PDF version will exist) to something more user-friendly and accessible.
The work has included:
A review of highway development management policy.
New sections on green infrastructure, active travel (making journeys in physically active ways, including on foot, or via the various human powered wheeled transport options such as bicycles, recumbents and wheelchairs etc) and supporting electric vehicles.
Information about new palettes of surfacing materials permitted by the council for use on highway to be adopted, based on criteria such as sustainability, availability and performance.
