National Highways announce next phase of Orwell Bridge works

Further work has been announced for the Orwell Bridge next month.

In September, a series of lane closures were announced after a bridge joint was found in a "potentially unsafe condition" leading to heavy delays in the area around Ipswich.

A further two nights of lane closures will take place in December by National Highways as it continue with the next phase of maintenance to the westbound bridge joints.

The lane closures will be in place from 8pm and 6am on Wednesday, December 4 and Thursday, December 5.

The restrictions will be in place along the westbound carriageway only.

Steven Thulborn, National Highways head of planning and development, said: “We understand the impact that any reduction in capacity on the Orwell Bridge can have to those who rely on this iconic and important piece of road infrastructure.

“Our work here is vital for the long-term operation of the bridge, and I would like to thank drivers for their patience and understanding.

“We are carrying the work out overnight when traffic levels are at their lightest and will cause the least amount of disruption possible. Road users travelling westbound across the bridge are advised to allow extra time to complete their journeys.”

A spokesman for the organisation said work has been scheduled to start the day after Ipswich Town Football Club’s home match against Crystal Palace on December 3, so supporters travelling to the game are not impacted.
