York Libdems have launched a petition calling for dualling of the Outer Ring Road to be funded in full.

City of York councillors will discuss their part of the project’s funding on Tuesday when they discuss their 2025/2026 amid warnings the project could be scaled back.

A council report warns it was unlikely that a significant gap in funding for the project would be closed and its scope may have to be reduced as a result.

Council transport spokesperson Cllr Kate Ravilious said  the dualling parts of the A1237 remained a high priority but a review was essential due to inflation pushing up costs.

She said a  full update on revisions to the scheme and the council’s options was set for the spring.

York and North Yorkshire Mayor David Skaith said he would continue to work with the council while a Government spokesperson said they were investing £25 million in the project.

Liberal Democrat Councillor for Haxby and Wigginton, Andrew Hollyer, said residents in north York experience "constant delays to their journeys as a result of gridlock" on the northern outer ring road."

"We are asking residents to back our call for the UK Government, York and North Yorkshire’s Labour Mayor, York Outer’s Labour MP and York’s Labour-run Council to urgently rethink plans to not dual the A1237," he said.

“If necessary, the York and North Yorkshire Mayor should use some of the £379m received following the cancellation of HS2 to fill any funding gap.”
