Galliford Try | Leading a Safety Culture: A303 Sparkford to Ilchester Safety Day

The mental and physical safety of our people should be the highest priority for us all. Which is why the recent event on the A303 RDP scheme, in Yeovil, was so crucial.

Galliford Try are delivering the A303 in partnership with National Highways. The scheme is a 3-mile upgrade between Sparkford to Ilchester, with the purpose of making this route safer and more accessible for customers.

On Wednesday 22nd of June, the whole team made the valuable decision to have a safety leadership stand down day. This was an opportunity to reset, reinvigorate and a refresh the importance we have on safety and the role everyone must play in helping ensure everyone goes home safe and well every single day. The event also took the opportunity to work with the local bakery to provide drinks and food, as well as raising money for True Heroes Racing, one of the A303 charitable partners. With the support of the valuable supply chain partners, various demonstrations were provided for the whole team to show what technology and systems were both in use and in development to help keep them safe and limit plant person interface.

“The value of pressing pause for a moment, allowing time to reflect, learn and appreciate why safety is so critical for us all, is just immense. To deliver the excellence we strive for, we have to support our people and enable our teams to embrace, understand and positively impact our collective ambitions. . The A303 team did just that, and I am proud of them for taking the time and investing in their people and I’m really pleased to see our knowingly safe and well strategy in action” David Lowery, Managing Director, Galliford Try.

HW Martins, the TM partner on the project, showcased their impact protection vehicle. Walters, earthworks delivery partner on the project, demoed their articulated dump truck (ADT), showcasing the safety features. Flannery provided a red zone demonstration, as well as a simulator, both of which allowed the teams to have a hands-on experience of the technology and machinery.

Stalsen partnered up with Galliford Try for the event to demonstrate the importance of hand protection, sharing their passion for ‘Making Hand Injuries History’.

“The safety leadership stand down day has been an exceptional testament to the team and leadership culture on the A303. The bespoke considerations that have been made around keeping this event local, keeping suppliers local and making this an impactful day for everyone involved. There will be more of these events to come.” Ross Glendinning, Operations Director, Galliford Try.
