A ROAD safety group has said the death of six young people in one day has been the worst recorded incident in its 43 year history.
On Saturday, a car careered into a second-hand store in at about 4.40am.
The road was cordoned-off by police and the emergency services attended the scene.
Four University of Essex students inside the car, Makyle Bailey, 22, Eva Darold-Tchikaya, 21, Anthony Hibbert, 24, and Daljang Wol, 22, all sadly died.
Residents had said a car involved in the collision was “absolutely unrecognisable”.
Magdalen Road was reopened on Sunday and many tributes have flooded in for the four students.
At 6.25pm on Saturday, police were called to the reports of a girl and a boy being involved in a hit-and-run collision with a car in Ashlyns, Pitsea.
Sadly, despite the best efforts of emergency services attending the scene, both children died.
The two children were later named locally as brother and sister Roman Casselden, 16 and Darcie, 9.
A fundraiser was set up to support the family of the two children.
Now, the Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP) which promotes road safety and casualty reduction across the county, has released a statement on the devastating incidents on Facebook.
It said: “This weekend, six young lives were lost following collisions in Colchester and Pitsea.
“There has never been this many people killed on our roads in a single day in the 43 years we have on record.
“Behind every number is a family facing unimaginable grief and our hearts go out to them.
