More than £8 million has been spent Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council repairing potholes and resurfacing roads and pathways since April 2024, new figures reveal.

It comes as West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) announced an extra £8.8 million in government funding – on top of the £24 million already allocated – for the region’s councils to tackle the problem. Dudley is to receive £1.6 million from it.

Around £6 million has been spent in 2024/25 so far on resurfacing, with Dudley Council’s highways team carrying out works on 70 roads across the borough.

More than nine miles of roads have been reconstructed or resurfaced.

They include part of Duncan Edwards Way and Birmingham New Road, Spies Lane, Tansey Green Road, The Broadway, Vicarage Road and Ruiton Street, Lower Gornal.

A further £2.3 million has been spent on repairing potholes and pavements in the financial year to date.

The team has filled in 2,700 potholes across the borough following reports from residents, with a further 650 pavement repair jobs completed.

Councillor Damian Corfield, cabinet member for highways and environmental services, said:

“As someone who has worked in the haulage industry for most of my life, I can fully understand and appreciate the frustrations motorists have with potholes. The condition of our roads is right up there as one of the things we receive most complaints about as a council. We are a listening authority and that is why we continue – even in really challenging financial times – to allocate millions from our budget to repair those roads most in need.

“We will continue to do all we can to make it as easy as possible for our residents to get around the borough.”
