A new bridge spanning almost 50 metres across the A45 near Coventry has opened up for the first time after the original, outdated structure was removed.
The steel bridge, across the A45 westbound entry slip at the A45/A46 Festival Interchange, is safer for pedestrians and cyclists and provides better access for people with disabilities. It also raises the headroom under the bridge as well as being wider, now 3.5m across, to enable both cyclists and pedestrians to use the footpath together more comfortably.
The bridge was transported to the site as an abnormal load from Kent in two parts which could then be lowered into place onto the concrete abutments late last year.
National Highways Project Manager Patricia Dray said: “The previous footbridge did not meet modern standards. This new bridge is more spacious and safer, it will need less maintenance and will benefit the local community for many years to come. “We appreciate that any works can cause disruption and are grateful to people for their patience while we have been carrying out this important work.”
After the bridge was lowered into place, extensive work was carried out on the surrounding footpaths, tackling overgrown vegetation and extending a retaining wall.
Finishing works took place last week and the bridge was opened to the general public on Saturday (12 February).
