Average Speed Cameras to Activate on A682 This Summer

The much-anticipated activation of average speed cameras along the A682, spanning from Gisburn to the North Yorkshire border near Long Preston, is slated to begin this summer. Originally expected to be operational by spring, these cameras are now poised to ‘go live’ soon, according to Lancashire County Council.

Cameras and average speed signs have been in place for several weeks, but have not yet been switched on, despite earlier expectations from Lancashire County Council that they would 'go live' in the spring.

The county council has installed the average speed cameras as part of a package of safety improvements on a number of A-roads across the county which have a history of serious incidents.

It received £7.9million from the Department for Transport's Safer Roads Programme, with around £449,000 being invested in measures on the A682 with speed cameras covering the stretch between Gisburn and Long Preston.

Besides the cameras, the safety measures include the installation of solar-powered road studs that illuminate the road’s centreline, improving visibility for drivers at night or during adverse weather conditions. Additionally, rumble strips have been added to the road edges. These strips are designed to alert drivers if they drift out of their lane, thereby preventing potential accidents caused by inattention or drowsiness.

Lancashire County Council assures that the cameras will soon be active, enhancing the safety of one of the county’s most dangerous roads. The delay has been attributed to the need for thorough testing and calibration of the cameras to ensure they function correctly once operational. This cautious approach aims to avoid any technical issues or inaccuracies in speed recording that could lead to disputes or unwarranted penalties for drivers.
