Footage and photographs show the progress at the A63 Castle Street project site.

Originally planned to finish this spring, it was announced in December that the completion of the A63 Castle Street project had been delayed by a year. The scheme will now not be finished until 2026 due to 'unexpected conditions.'

This weekend saw a full closure in place, allowing Ashcourt to deliver 1,200 cubic metres of concrete. The underpass at Mytongate will form part of a new split-level junction with Ferensway and Commercial Road crossing over the A63. The eastbound carriageway between Princes Dock Street and Market Place is also being widened to three lanes as part of the £355m project which "will improve access to the port, congestion, safety and connections between the city centre and the tourist and recreational facilities".

In its latest update, announcing the road closures, National Highways said: "We’re now at the stage where we can start to pour concrete for the base slabs of the underpass. To carry this out safely, we’ll need to close the A63 Castle Street over a full weekend, from 8pm on Friday 7 March until 6am on Monday 10 March.

"The A63 will be closed between Daltry Street and Roger Milllward Way, in both directions. We’ll be pumping more than 1,200 cubic metres of concrete - roughly half of an Olympic swimming pool - which is a huge task, with pumps running for the full weekend.

"Machinery will also be needed across both carriageways as we construct the base for the new electronic signage. Routes to city centre parks, retail and leisure facilities will still be available. Drivers are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys.

"During the weekend, we’ll also complete some key areas of work throughout the scheme, including works on the A63 main carriageway close to some residential areas.

"The equipment we use means that some disturbance is unfortunately unavoidable, but we’ll make every effort to minimise noise caused by the activity."

A fully signed diversion is in place via the A15, A164, A1079, A1033 for eastbound traffic, and vice versa for westbound.
