Latest key development in the Missing Link project
The £460m A417 Missing Link road building scheme enters a major new phase on Monday (January 27) as bridge structures start arriving at the site near the Air Balloon roundabout. They will be transported on large vehicles and traffic will need to be stopped on nearby roads for 10 minutes on five dates.
The bridge beams will arrive under escort and will be taken to the National Highways construction site next to the temporary mini-roundabouts on the A436 near the A417 junction. Site workers will have stop/start boards to stop traffic to ensure the structures arrive safely and to ensure the safety of people travelling.
In a letter sent out to residents and interested parties, National Highways said: "The vehicles will be large and escorted up to the Air Balloon roundabout from the A419/A417 direction turning right into our site entrance at the temporary roundabouts and operatives will stop the traffic on adjacent roads to facilitate the large vehicles and escort vans."
National Highways’ A417 Missing Link scheme includes
3.4 miles of new dual carriageway connecting the existing A417 Brockworth bypass with the existing A417 dual carriageway south of Cowley and ultimately, the M5 in Gloucestershire and the M4 in Swindon, Wiltshire
the section to the west of the existing Air Balloon roundabout would follow the existing A417 corridor. However, the section to the south and east of the Air Balloon roundabout would be offline, away from the existing road corridor;
a new junction at Shab Hill, providing a link from the A417 to the A436 towards Oxford and into Birdlip;
a new junction near Cowley, replacing the existing Cowley roundabout;
the existing A417 between the Air Balloon roundabout and the Cowley roundabout would be repurposed, converting some lengths of this existing road into a route for walkers, cyclists and horse riders, while retaining other sections to maintain local access for residents.
